The villagers of St Hilary, their families and friends, weren’t put off by the rain and came to the village hall and the green to enjoy a rather wet summer fete.
The event raised more than £1,000 towards the upkeep of the hall, an important facility and the focus of village life.
The Vale Ukulele Band from Llantwit Major serenaded attendees with suitably chosen tunes such as ‘Singing in the Rain’ and ‘Bring me Sunshine’.
Children were kept entertained in the story-telling tent and with craft activities.
For the peckish, there were mountains of homemade cake served up with teas and coffees, along with artisan ice creams and a barbecue. Other stalls included books, a tombola and bric-a-brac.
Vale MP, Alun Cairns, dropped in during the afternoon to talk to villagers.
The rain couldn’t stop races from taking place on the green with medals being awarded to participants aged from three to 80. The final event of the day was a steeplechase featuring adults in inflatable horse costumes and hay bales.
