Our grandparents were Evan and Florence Frederick who used to live in Rose Cottage behind the Bush.
I believe that my grandmother Florence Frederick, late of Rose Cottage which stood in what is now the rear of the car park of the Bush and latterly of number 1 the Crescent, met my grandfather whilst he was convalescing in New Beaupre. He inflated his age to enlist into the army – he was only 13 or 14 but said that he was 16 – and after his recovery changed his name slightly so that he could re-enlist. You could say that he was a pretty determined kind of chap!
I remember my grandparents moving to 1 Church Crescent, with all the villagers helping them move their belongings, must have been in 1954/55.
Our grandfather, Evan (also known as Ianto) was a gardener in the "big houses" in the village such as Erw Fain, the Manor, Mrs Shaw's , and Kninkin which I adored. His garden was spectacular and people used to come from miles around to see it. He also bred Norwich or Norfolk terriers.
My Dad, Stan Frederick, was born in 1925 in Rose Cottage which was at the back of the Bush where the car park is now. It was very cosy, with rambling roses around the front door. He used to keep his motorcycle, a Norton, in the Bush garage which is now the snug on the left hand side. My Mum, Elvira (known as Vera), said it was breaking down more than running in their ‘courting‘ days! I have photos of my grandparents and me as a baby outside Rose Cottage which I loved.
My father and his brother John were bell ringers in the Church.
My brother, Neil and our Dad used to live with my grandparents, Evan and Florence, for longish periods when our mother was frequently in hospital having ear operations.
